Can I Row Today?

Rising river levels can carry debris ranging from small branches to large logs, creating hazards for all rowing shells. Debris is often most common during and shortly after high water. Whenever possible, wait 24 hours after the river crests before rowing to allow debris to clear.

Flow Rate Policies

WRA uses the following flow rate guidelines, measured in cubic feet per second (cfs), when river debris is not a concern. Keep in mind that flow readings from Valley Center take about 12 hours to reach Wichita and do not account for rainfall that occurs downstream.


Under 500 cfs

  • All Rowers
  • All Shell Types

500 - 1,000 cfs

  • Level III & IV
  • No Learn-to-Row Singles
1,000 - 1,500 cfs
  • Level III: No Singles
  • Level IV: All Shells

1,500 - 2,000 cfs

  • Level IV: No Singles
  • Consider Using a Lower-Level Boat

2,000 - 2,500 cfs

  • Level IV: No Singles or Doubles 
  • Use Extreme Caution

Over 2,500 cfs

  • River closed
  • No WRA boats permitted
